CRAP – FISH OUTING

At 05:30 AM on Saturday 22nd February a small group of Crimehouse Regulars assembled by Crimehouse DLR. A short journey to Blackwell DLR and a similar short walk down to the historic Billingsgate Fish Market. We walked straight in to the market, no queues this time of year and passed an array of two wheeled trolley’s as they are not permitted in the busy yet compact market.

Cold wet and clammy to the touch, that’s enough about Buzzlightgear’s handshake, we walked around the market floor in somewhat of a trance at the vast array of fish and crustaceans for sale.

Monkfish, Red Snapper, King Prawns, Turbot, Halibut you name it, they had it. I picked up four Smoke Kippers and then headed with the group to the cafe for the much talked about Bacon and Scallop crusty roll.

We were not disappointed, fantastic grub washed down with a nice cup of builders tea. I will most certainly be heading there again with a shopping list and seafood recipes in mind.

CRAP – Billingsgate Trip 22nd February

Update:

Saturday 22nd March, meeting at Crimehouse DLR at 05:30 AM. Good news, having researched the transport timings, The DLR is running and we can get a DLR from Crimehouse to either Poplar or Canary Dwarf and make the short walk to Billingsgate. The date has been moved forward to accommodate a CRAP member whose working schedule leaves them with one Saturday in six free.

I suspect that this event could well become established as a regular one once, if not twice a month. This Iconic venue will not be with us for much longer so we should make the most of it. I hope that CRAP members will share their seafood culinary expertise to expand the many possibilities a trip to Billingsgate can provide.

The stories of a Bacon and Scallop crusty roll for breakfast at Billingsgate have become stuff of legend in The Charlie Bravo HQ.

I made the mistake of saying one day ‘we should organise a trip’ and since then every mention of Billingsgate or bacon or scallops or combination thereof has focused people’s gaze on me.

So here it is our first CRAP trip to Billingsgate
